Change Taxes Through the Budget Proposal
In Geoplanetical, open Budget → Revenue & taxes, edit the tax you want to change, and select Apply in the Budget project bar to adopt the proposal. Moving a slider or editing a tax band only prepares a draft. The preview matters because taxes and spending changes are committed together.
The official tax and budget instructions explain the same shared proposal, including validation issues that can prevent it from being applied.
Edit the Tax That Matches Your Goal
Select a tax under Revenue & taxes. Income tax has its own detailed bracket editor; VAT supports different categories for individual products. Social contributions let you change employee and employer contributions separately.
For income tax:
- Open Income tax → Edit tax brackets.
- Choose Month or Year for the displayed amounts.
- Set each Upper threshold and Marginal rate, adding a bracket if needed.
- Under Other rules, review the personal allowance, threshold indexation, and treatment of capital income.
A marginal rate applies only to income within its band. Capital income can follow the ordinary schedule, a separate rate, or an exemption; the personal allowance applies to labor income.
Test the Impact Before Applying It
Use Test a household to enter labor income after social deductions but before the personal allowance, plus any capital income. Compare the tax calculation and the amount left. This test does not change a real household or adopt a policy.
For social contributions, Test a salary instead compares employer cost with pay after contributions and before income tax. These previews answer different questions.
Check the effects on social groups and the complete budget. Close the editor with Done, then review projected revenue, spending, and balance before choosing Apply.
Resolve a Draft That Will Not Apply
Wait for the forecast and correct flagged values. Income-tax thresholds must increase, and rates must stay level or rise between successive brackets. If the game reports that the budget has changed, use Discard and prepare a fresh proposal instead of treating the old preview as current policy.
The October 29 version 1.0.2 notes also rename Treasury to State cash. If you compare a current screen with older instructions, that label refers to the renamed cash display.
FAQ
Does changing a tax slider immediately change policy?
No. You must apply the shared budget proposal to enact the change.
Does a higher income-tax band tax all income at that rate?
No. Its marginal rate applies only to income inside that band.
Why did my tax changes disappear after Discard?
Discard abandons pending changes and reloads the budget currently in force. Prepare the changes again if you still want to adopt them.
